Rock architecture, in the Deccan plateau in central and south India, is part of the 2.5 billion years old “Dharwar craton”. It hosts some of the oldest and most stable stone formations in the world.
Rock is the third volume of Sudeep Sen’s eco-poetry trilogy, which starts with the prize-winning first volume, Anthropocene: Climate Change, Contagion, Consolation. The second volume, Red, had its conception and much of its growth during a season in South Africa’s ‘Cradle of Humankind’. Rock continues and stretches that eco-geological arc, expanding the reach to include India in a more concrete manner — thereby inter-linking earth’s meaningful geographies and “climate imaginaries”.

Sudeep Sen’s work has been translated into 25 languages. He was Joint-Winner of the US$10,000 Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize 2021-22 and winner of the Wise Owl Literary Award 2025 for Anthropocene (Pippa Rann Books, UK), recipient of the A. K. Ramanujan Translation Award 2009 for Aria, winner of the Global Literary Festival Award for ‘Literary Excellence & Best Book of the Year’ 2017, as well as achieving the shortlist for the Rabindranath Tagore Literature Prize 2020 for EroText (Penguin Random House, 2016). The Statesman (India) included Rain in ‘Best Books of the Year’ (2002).
Sen was the 2023 Writer-in-Residence at the Nirox Foundation, South Africa. An esteemed anthologist (The HarperCollins Book of English Poetry, World English Poetry, Modern English Poetry by Younger Indians, and Converse: Contemporary English Poetry by Indians), he is the only Asian who has been invited to deliver the Derek Walcott Lecture and to read at the Nobel Laureate Festival (in 2013).
