Udaan

Udaan (2010)

We all look for inspiration from popular culture in times of distress and Bollywood has told many coming-of-age stories, where underdogs make it big. While most underdog stories are too grand to fathom, Udaan’s simplicity struck cord with teenagers and young adults instantly. The film doesn’t attempt to conceal anything behind its small-town setting and relatable characters, who are haunted by the same demons that torment millions of middle class Indians. The fear-hate bond that the protagonist Rohan (Rajat) shares with his father Bhairav Singh (Ronit Roy), a dominating, stereotypical patriarch, is all too familiar. Hence, when he eventually flies away from this bondage, the resolution too feels achievable to whoever seeks it.
