Maqbool (2003)

Nobody wrote tragedies better than William Shakespeare. And to interpret one of his greatest stories, Macbeth, in a Mumbai underworld setting, and be able to bring to life its complex characters on screen is an enormous achievement. Maqbool is a masterpiece, an acting manual for a generation of actors, and a guide on how to bring out hidden layers of characters that make them human and not mere sketches. The dark theme of the film is far from the benchmarks of Bollywood, which is why it bombed at the box office, but left an indelible mark on the annals of Hindi cinema.
