1947: Earth is a part of an elements trilogy by Indo-Canadian director Deepa Mehta. Each of the three films, Fire, Earth, and Water, have unrelated storylines, but the narration of each film is hard-hitting and intrusive. Earth captures the horrors of India’s most tragic historical event and the permanent imprint it leaves on the personalities of the protagonists. The film manages to depict the contrast in emotions portrayed on-screen, starting with friendship, excitement, and moments of joy, and ending with hatred, loss, and regret. Earth’s simple depiction of the harsh realities hits the viewers hard and leave them without the satisfaction of a resolution.
