An early chapter in the book explains the complex class structure, martial race theory, identity, and the primary elements that created an effective combat regiment and, more importantly, how the military authorities structured Indian regiments to exploit and reinforce a South Asian soldier’s most deeply rooted values and his sense of self. This book therefore is a significant historical and scholarly contribution about South Asia and the First World War.
Reviews, Interviews, and Mentions
“The book arrived and I am very impressed. Physically it is a beautiful piece, and the slipcase is a very nice touch. The contents fill a void in understanding the composition and nature of the Indian regiments in World War 1. It is a great addition to my reference collection and complements my small collection of books about the Indian regiments in WW! Thank you very much” – Axel E. Borg, Distinguished Wine and Food Science Bibliographer Emeritus, University Library, University of California, Davis, USA, 12 August 2022
“The book arrived safely today and I am absolutely delighted with it – a real treasure, so beautifully researched, written and presented. Thank you“ – Capt. Owen Dobson BEM, U.K., 20 August 2022

For anyone with an interest in the history, badges and battle honours of the Cavalry and Infantry Regiments of the Indian army in the First World War, Sowars and Sepoys in the Great War 1914–1918 is an absolute must… it will become the standard work on the subject and a lasting tribute to the largest volunteer army of all time, which sustained over 60,000 fatal casualties and earned 11 Victoria Crosses for gallantry during the war.
