Does Hindu astrology work? If so, why?
When does it not work? Why?
Where and how did Hindu astrology arise and develop?
What are its similarities with other astrological systems?
These are among the unusual and fascinating questions tackled by an Oxford mathematician, Dr. A. P. Stone, who learned Sanskrit specifically for the purpose of reading the original scriptures in Sanskrit.
An authoritative classic on Hindu astrology, this book has been out of print for decades, and was originally published only in hardback.
Now it is being published in paperback for the professional astrologer as well as for the general public.
Analysing various models for the origin, development, and functioning of yugas, manvantaras, karma, and Vedic astrology, this book also discusses the role of the supernatural and synchronicity.
The epilogue includes the author’s reflections on science, on astrology, and on spirituality.

Astrology deals with basic human needs.
It is of interest to scholars of the subject, to the general public, and to practicing astrologers.
If you are a student of astrology, you will find useful the references and Sanskrit quotations. Hindu astrology or Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in an effort to indicate the best and most auspicious time for rituals, ceremonies, and – by extension – all human actions, whether war, marriage, moving home, business deals, seting off from your home, returning to your home, and indeed when or what to eat or drink.
But what if you are not a student or even a practitioner of astrology? What if you are simply a mathematician, a scientist or an ordinary person interested in the subject?
The topics which this book focuses on are those which have been especially selected for their interest to astrologers, but also to scholars, to scientists, to mathematicians, as well as to the average interested reader.
