Bandit-Queen

Bandit Queen (1994)

The bosom of our ageing motherland is replete with stories of attrition, transformation, and retribution, but very few have risen to shock and awe the nation in the way the story of Phoolan Devi did. Shekar Kapur’s film on the life of a downtrodden woman turned bandit turned politician shocked the viewers by simply telling the reality, without embellishing it with exaggerated moments that cinema often falls prey to. The real locations, the guerrilla style of shooting, real actors, and reality of the oppression that rural women go through in the country and still survive, makes Bandit Queen a haunting, but wonderful work of art.

Director – Shekhar Kapur
